Underlying this exploration is my reflection on the Venusian duality and the symbolisms associated with it \u2014 the Moon, femininity, water, fertility, the death and regeneration of nature, and creative energy; the same symbol bears different names such as Ishtar (or Inanna) \u2014 queen of heaven and queen of the underworld \u2014 the goddess of love and war.<\/p>\n The energetic exchange between these ambivalent forces embodied in my exploration is multilayered through the tension between visual and literary devices and the synergy of both\u2014 the battle between color (painting) and drawing, the potential of narrative-shifts of biomorphic forms in painting, the interlacing of visual expression (painting) and poetic imagination (poetry), and the re-framing of mythical symbols via poetry as well as through the tension of juxtaposing the visual (painting) with the verbal (work title).<\/p>\n In the end, the totality of this exhibition forms an allegorical space \u2014 a space of in-between \u2014 allowing the ebb and flow of experiencing these interactions to converge, take shape and assume new meanings within viewers.<\/p>\n Without storytelling per-se, I am creating my own myth \u2014 of hope, of timelessness, of love and light, the same pursuit since human\u2019s ancient past, as seen in Dante\u2019s Divine Comedy, and still finds its resonance in the poem from which the title of this exhibition is borrowed.<\/p>\n Let the myth unfold.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab title=”\u5275\u4f5c\u81ea\u8ff0” _builder_version=”4.19.0″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n \u5b58\u5728\u65bc\u751f\u547d\u8207\u5275\u9020\u88e1\u4ea4\u4e92\u5171\u5b58\u7684\u4e8c\u5143\u529b\u91cf\uff0c\u5f7c\u6b64\u62c9\u92f8\u8207\u4ea4\u878d\u7684\u5f35\u529b\u5730\u5e36\u662f\u6211\u4e00\u8cab\u7684\u7126\u9ede\u3002<\/p>\n \u6b64\u6b21\u6211\u904b\u7528\u7e6a\u756b\u8207\u8a69\u6b4c\u88e1\u8272\u5f69\u3001\u7b46\u89f8\u59ff\u614b\u3001\u6bd4\u55bb\u8207\u610f\u8c61\u7684\u8c61\u5fb5\u529b\u91cf\uff0c\u63a2\u7d22\u5169\u6975\u6fc0\u76ea\u5730\u5e36\u7684\u65b0\u751f\u80fd\u91cf\u3002\u80cc\u5f8c\u7684\u860a\u610f\uff0c\u662f\u6211\u5c0d\u91d1\u661f\uff08\u6216\u7dad\u7d0d\u65af\uff09\u7684\u4e8c\u5143\u5c6c\u6027\u6fc0\u767c\u4eba\u985e\u6587\u660e\u7522\u751f\u7684\u96d9\u91cd\u8c61\u5fb5\u7b26\u865f\u4e4b\u91cd\u8a2a\u8207\u518d\u5851\u2500\u2500\u9670\u6027\u3001\u8c50\u9952\u3001\u611b\u8207\u6230\u722d\u3001\u6b7b\u4ea1\u8207\u518d\u751f\u3002<\/p>\n \u7d50\u5408\u8996\u89ba\u8207\u6587\u5b57\u5169\u7a2e\u7570\u8cea\u7684\u5275\u4f5c\u8a9e\u8a00\u8207\u5a92\u4ecb\uff0c\u5f62\u6210\u591a\u91cd\u7684\u62c9\u92f8\u8868\u73fe\u6a5f\u5236\uff0c\u76ee\u7684\u5728\u8ce6\u4e88\u89c0\u611f\u7d93\u9a57\u591a\u5c64\u6b21\u7684\u78b0\u649e\uff0c\u4ee5\u9ad4\u73fe\u77db\u76fe\u751f\u547d\u529b\u7684\u8907\u96dc\u9762\u8c8c\u3002\u4f8b\u5982\uff1a\u7e6a\u756b\u4e2d\u8272\u5f69\u8207\u7d20\u63cf\u9593\u7684\u885d\u7a81\u8207\u4ea4\u878d\uff1b\u6709\u6a5f\u7684\u8996\u89ba\u5f62\u614b\u56e0\u61c9\u8996\u89d2\u6539\u8b8a\u800c\u91cd\u7d44\u7684\u6f5b\u80fd\uff0c\u4f7f\u8996\u89ba\u6558\u4e8b\u6046\u8655\u65bc\u86fb\u8b8a\u6b77\u7a0b\uff1b\u85c9\u8996\u89ba\u610f\u8c61\uff08\u89c0\uff09\u8207\u8a69\u610f\u60f3\u50cf\uff08\u60f3\uff09\u4ea4\u7e54\u64f4\u5145\u5bd3\u610f\u80fd\u91cf\uff1b\u53c8\u6216\u85c9\u8996\u89ba\u4f5c\u54c1\u5167\u6db5\u5916\u64f4\u7684\u5f35\u529b\u8207\u4f5c\u54c1\u6587\u5b57\u6a19\u984c\u9593\u7684\u5c0d\u5cd9\uff0c\u53cd\u601d\u91cd\u5851\u795e\u8a71\u8c61\u5fb5\u3002<\/p>\n \u6700\u7d42\uff0c\u4f5c\u54c1\u9593\u7684\u7a4d\u6975\u5c0d\u8a71\u64f4\u5145\u81f3\u5c55\u5834\u6574\u9ad4\uff0c\u5f62\u6210\u5bd3\u610f\u767c\u9175\u7684\u7a7a\u9593\u2500\u2500\u4ee5\u5bb9\u7d0d\u89c0\u8005\u8dcc\u5b95\u8d77\u4f0f\u7684\u7e41\u8907\u7d93\u9a57\uff0c\u5728\u4e0d\u65b7\u7684\u532f\u805a\u8207\u8f49\u5316\u4e2d\u5f62\u6210\u5404\u81ea\u7684\u610f\u7fa9\u3002<\/p>\n \u4e0d\u85c9\u7dda\u6027\u7684\u92ea\u9673\uff0c\u6211\u6b32\u5275\u9020\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u795e\u8a71\u2500\u2500\u4e00\u500b\u95dc\u65bc\u5e0c\u671b\u3001\u7121\u50f9\u7684\u6c38\u6046\u3001\u611b\u8207\u5149\u7684\u795e\u8a71\uff1b\u4e00\u4efd\u4eba\u985e\u4e99\u53e4\u7684\u8ffd\u6c42\uff0c\u4e0d\u50c5\u898b\u65bc\u4f46\u4e01\u300a\u795e\u66f2\u300b\uff0c\u4ea6\u5982\u6b64\u6b21\u5c55\u984c\u51fa\u8655\u7684\u8a69\u4f5c\u6240\u5171\u9cf4\u3002<\/p>\n \u795e\u8a71\uff0c\u624d\u6b63\u8981\u958b\u59cb\u3002<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab title=”Press Release” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n \u201cI wanted to paint light, To Emily Wang, the creative process is a constant negotiation between intuition and reason. It is a transformative process <\/span>\u2014 engaging a visual energy and qualities of emotional tension through the dynamics of visual syntax, which in turn creates feeling and narrative. It is the unification of both the cognitive and sensate that makes the experience of visual discovery meaningful to her.<\/span><\/p>\n The quality of her work is therefore multilayered. On the one hand, this stems from her dual discipline in fine arts and philosophy; on the other, it has to do with her in-depth practice in multiple visual mediums including photography, drawing, and painting. The direction of her practice is also shaped by her upbringing and life experience as an outlander, a role she involuntarily inherited but later has become the perspective she adopts. Her identity as a \u201cneither-nor\u201d enables her compassionate understanding and insight into the underlying ideologies or assumptions of the various cultural and socio-political groups she encounters. This motivates her to go beyond the apparent dichotomy and strives for timeless value. With a keen eye and poetic empathy, Wang infuses her work with vitality by leveraging seemingly oxymoronic elements.<\/span><\/p>\n Wang defines herself as a colorist. The dynamic relations between color and drawing underpin the ethos of her oeuvre. Through the vibrant dialogue composed of colors and gestural forms, and through her approach of all-over painting, Wang nurtures an intricate spatial tension across her canvas. The energy of each work is brought about by a constantly shifting correlation between the myriad of brushstrokes. As one\u2019s gaze travels across the canvas, and with any changes in perspective and focal point, one experiences a simultaneous collision and coalescence of opposing energies. Through prolonged engagement in seeing, the multiplicity of narrative potentials unfolds gradually. <\/span><\/p>\n In her 2019 solo exhibition A Sense of Pleasure<\/em>, Wang selected a series of abstract works from her decade-long endeavor of working from direct observation, including drawings and paintings, as well as photographic polyptychs of equally abstract quality. Her process began with constructing large-scale tabletop installation resembling an interior landscape that allows her an immersive experience throughout her creative process <\/span>\u2014 from constructing it to visually engaging it, and painting from it. Swimming in the ocean of sensory experiences, her body becomes a highly perceptive vehicle that simultaneously takes on multiple roles as a beholder, a mediator, and the creator throughout the creative process. The triangular relationship was transformed on the canvas via brushstrokes <\/span>\u2014 with each stroke setting in motion new sets of visual correlations and meaning.<\/span><\/p>\n In her latest solo exhibition Tell Me a Story<\/em> at TKG+<\/sup> Projects, the energetic exchange between ambivalent forces once again takes center stage. In addition to painting, she also integrates poetry in her exploration of duality. Since the inception of the theme related to this exhibition, Wang began to experience a strong sense of poetic sound along with the ebb and flow of her inner experiences during her creative process. Incubated for years, the songs without words she experienced began to materialize in 2020 when she relocated to a small coastal town in eastern Taiwan. The changeable sea is the grand theatre of nature\u2019s dual force which resonates with the artist\u2019s theme of exploration. Poetry came to her during her daily walk to the Pacific. Imageries and symbols in her poems infuse personal reflections and dream revelations of Venusian dual symbolisms, connecting personal perspective with the general theme of her exploration of duality. Similarly, through the suggestive power of color relations, she combines observation and imagination in her painting process, and infuses visual discoveries made during her process with visions inspired by her dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n By\u00a0colliding and coalescing two different mediums of expression, the exhibition space is transformed into\u00a0an allegorical space\u00a0to\u00a0invoke a\u00a0sense of\u00a0mythical experience. <\/span><\/p>\n The drawing and the poem\u00a0combination in the opening section\u00a0engages\u00a0the theme directly <\/span>\u2014 the artist\u2019s yearning for Arcadia or eternity <\/span>\u2014 through its\u00a0absence.\u00a0By\u00a0pairing\u00a0an unfinished drawing\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0poem\u00a0that\u00a0only hints at the possibility of the archetypal Venusian being, the artist\u00a0answers\u00a0the title of her exhibition\u00a0that the quest for a promised land has no\u00a0end\u00a0and is always unfolding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The two\u00a0large-scale\u00a0double-sided paintings\u00a0in the main exhibition area offers a new aspect of\u00a0the tension between\u00a0color and drawing. Through serendipity, Wang adopts a new textile material as\u00a0her canvas. Unexpectedly, some heavy paint strokes\u00a0penetrated the surface and created a drawing imbued with the organic quality resembling cave-painting that is distinct from the visual quality and meaning of the painting in the front. Each backside drawing is then finished on-site to complete its dialogue with the painting in the front. The permeability and penetration of color provides a new perspective on Wang\u2019s oeuvre.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n An artist changes the world not by physical force, but through the nurturing quality of her work. When reality becomes stranger than fiction, Wang seeks harmony and union of oppositions on a higher level. Just as the point of departure of the artist\u2019s exploration of duality began with her yearning for Arcadia, it was the dark imageries of Dante\u2019s Inferno <\/em>and the corruption of humanity that symbolize that Wang struggled to reconcile with <\/span>\u2014 including her own shadows <\/span>\u2014 throughout her creative process. Out of this dark process, Wang gave birth to artwork filled with vitality; each symbolizes her spiritual rebirth. This is the best gift an artist can give to this world, and what the artist can contribute to the spiritual growth of the collective in the time of mania.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_tab][et_pb_tab
